Bar-chi, that is the combination of the words bar and sushi. I never knew this existed until I went to Barchi on Colorado St in Austin.
Going there, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was not disappointed by my experience. I was greeted by a nice host who showed me my table. I got a regular menu, drinks menu, and a happy hour menu. The happy hour menu has a variety of sushi rolls you can choose from. The happy hour menu also includes many drinks they make fresh. The menu includes rolls such as california, avocado, spicy tuna, and the austin roll with many more where that came from.
I ordered the coconut shrimp, fried calamari and roasted octopus for an appetizer and the shaggy dog sushi roll as an entree. The octopus was a real eye opener for me, because I’ve never had octopus served that way before. The calamari and coconut shrimp both have a nice crispy texture on the outside. The calamari came with a side of soy sauce and lemon. Mixing them to create a simple dipping sauce pairs great with the calamari. The coconut shrimp came with sweet n’ sour sauce, pickled onions, and sliced cucumber.
The shaggy roll is filled with shrimp and avocado, wrapped with Nori, topped with crab and a drizzle of spicy mayo on top, and it was so good. The bill in total was $12.00 including the drink. The drink I had was a water. The feeling in the restaurant has a nice vibe, but they do play loud music close to the bar, but I was fine with it. The server I had was really nice and took care of what I needed with no problems.
Overall my experience at Barchi was nice and delightful. I would recommend going during happy hour so you have more choices to pick. This place is great for cheap sushi and beer after a long day of work.
